We piled into Silâs RAV4 and made it to the restaurant in under two minutes.
Broomsticks couldâve gotten us there in a matter of seconds. However, finding a way to successfully stash four such magical devices while avoiding curious eyes wouldâve been problematic.
The restaurant dominates the bottom two floors of a pre-Civil War mercantile building situated along the squareâs northern edge. The décor and ambiance incorporates the buildingâs history, along with the essence of Americaâs âzoot suitâ era. The atmosphere often reminds me of our better Chicago memories.
Since a quiet booth was available earlier than our reservation for a table, we accepted the offer to be seated immediately. While waiting for our drinks and an appetizer, we enjoyed chit-chat about the upcoming frog-leg festival that in the past has brought half a million souls to our quaint little town. Delighted by this distraction, it kept me from thinking about anything dark and terrible that could potentially derail the festivalâperhaps permanently, if Abaddonâs intentions were anything like the mass slaughters of ancient lore. Meanwhile, I found myself drawn to the unusual engagement rings worn by Sebastian and Daciana.
The matching silver rings were forged by the Grand Wizard Gregorius Ninnius many centuries ago, and kept safe by his apprentice, Sorin Gabon. Each ring bears the image of a fox in repose. The rings were engraved by hand, and the most significant difference between them is in the jeweled eyes. Daciâs ring has a pair of rubies for the eyes and Basâ ring features sapphires.
The union between these kids almost didnât happen on account of the EECâs worries about an all-out war between the Radus and Mateis. However, Fateâs wishes have now been proven to be far greater, as their love appears to have been predestined from even before they first met.
âGabe, would you care to share a chicken marsala/ravioli combo with me?â Sil asked, after all of us had a moment to peruse the menu.
âSure.â It sounded great, and my hunger was quickened in anticipation of a delectable meal... until my phone suddenly rang. âI wonder who it is? Sorry, everyone.â
I retrieved my cell from my jeansâ pocket, glanced at the screen.
âItâs Adrian,â I announced, before answering the call. âHey, itâs about time, brother. Whatâs up?â
âDid I catch you at a bad time, bro?â
âWeâre here at Camaritiâs,â I replied. âIâve been dying for an update, but weâll likely be headed home in an hour or so. If itâs not an emergency, can it wait until then?â
âIt would be better if you can meet me within the hour, Gabe.â He sounded agitated, and with an added edge from something I hadnât sensed in Adrian in decades: worry. âIâm sorry I didnât get back in touch with you sooner. I did encounter something âoffâ at the wormhole and Iâve been doing some research on your Soul Taker and the images you sent to my email since early this morning.â
âAnd?â
âItâs not good, bro.â
The feeling of dread that I had managed to subdue, until now, suddenly bubbled over, seizing my gut.
