We piled into Sil’s RAV4 and made it to the restaurant in under two minutes.

Broomsticks could’ve gotten us there in a matter of seconds. However, finding a way to successfully stash four such magical devices while avoiding curious eyes would’ve been problematic.

The restaurant dominates the bottom two floors of a pre-Civil War mercantile building situated along the square’s northern edge. The décor and ambiance incorporates the building’s history, along with the essence of America’s ‘zoot suit’ era. The atmosphere often reminds me of our better Chicago memories.

Since a quiet booth was available earlier than our reservation for a table, we accepted the offer to be seated immediately. While waiting for our drinks and an appetizer, we enjoyed chit-chat about the upcoming frog-leg festival that in the past has brought half a million souls to our quaint little town. Delighted by this distraction, it kept me from thinking about anything dark and terrible that could potentially derail the festival—perhaps permanently, if Abaddon’s intentions were anything like the mass slaughters of ancient lore. Meanwhile, I found myself drawn to the unusual engagement rings worn by Sebastian and Daciana.

The matching silver rings were forged by the Grand Wizard Gregorius Ninnius many centuries ago, and kept safe by his apprentice, Sorin Gabon. Each ring bears the image of a fox in repose. The rings were engraved by hand, and the most significant difference between them is in the jeweled eyes. Daci’s ring has a pair of rubies for the eyes and Bas’ ring features sapphires.

The union between these kids almost didn’t happen on account of the EEC’s worries about an all-out war between the Radus and Mateis. However, Fate’s wishes have now been proven to be far greater, as their love appears to have been predestined from even before they first met.

“Gabe, would you care to share a chicken marsala/ravioli combo with me?” Sil asked, after all of us had a moment to peruse the menu.

“Sure.” It sounded great, and my hunger was quickened in anticipation of a delectable meal... until my phone suddenly rang. “I wonder who it is? Sorry, everyone.”

I retrieved my cell from my jeans’ pocket, glanced at the screen.

“It’s Adrian,” I announced, before answering the call. “Hey, it’s about time, brother. What’s up?”

“Did I catch you at a bad time, bro?”

“We’re here at Camariti’s,” I replied. “I’ve been dying for an update, but we’ll likely be headed home in an hour or so. If it’s not an emergency, can it wait until then?”

“It would be better if you can meet me within the hour, Gabe.” He sounded agitated, and with an added edge from something I hadn’t sensed in Adrian in decades: worry. “I’m sorry I didn’t get back in touch with you sooner. I did encounter something ‘off’ at the wormhole and I’ve been doing some research on your Soul Taker and the images you sent to my email since early this morning.”

“And?”

“It’s not good, bro.”

The feeling of dread that I had managed to subdue, until now, suddenly bubbled over, seizing my gut.
